This Page Intentionally Left Blank

“…………………………………………………………………………. “

Today’s quote is empty on purpose.

I recently ran across this message in a book: “This page intentionally left blank” and it got me thinking. Why would someone do this, leave a page blank? I mean, why were the other pages filled with content but this one page is empty? I can imagine that this page feels a nit neglected or relegated to the unimportant section.

OK, you publishers, graphic designers, and editors – I can hear you all excited to tell me the technical reasons why a page might be left blank. But that would ruin my analogy, wouldn’t it?

So, here’s this large book, each page lovingly filled with the author’s content. The book has been created a little at a time, each section building upon the previous. And it all fits neatly within the book’s cover.

And yet there is that one page left intentionally blank.

Now, let’s imagine this book represents your life up until now. All of your experiences have been captured in explicit detail. There are photos and memorabilia pasted in, and some pages have evidence of tears shed. A few sections have been highlighted with yellow marker and some pages show great wear and tear. Would-a, should-a, could-a’s are scribbled in the margins. This is a book you treasure because it is uniquely you, recounting your triumphs, failures, indecision, risks taken, and personal growth.

And yet there is that one page left intentionally blank.

So why do you have a blank page? Surely you would have used every page to capture each decision, event, and nuance from your life, wouldn’t you?

What if this page was intentionally left blank—as an opportunity? As a gift for you and a kind of  “get out of jail free” card?

What if you looked upon this page as a serendipitous opportunity and a personal challenge?

This blank page is daring you to fill it in, not with the same-old, same-old stuff of your life, but with a fresh eye. It’s calling to you and asking you to write the next page of your life—going forward from today, with a new perspective.

So what’s the gift? This page has no rules associated with it! It’s blank, with plenty of room to add

whatever you choose. You can reinvent yourself or tweak a few things. You can let your creativity run wild, adding in something you feel may be missing or amplifying more of what you truly love. Since it’s your page, no editor is going to revise it – you have the final say.

This is your page! Your life! And you have the ability to write the next scene, in your own way, on your own terms. There’s great power in that.

So, take a moment and think about what you’d really like to write into your life. What could you add or change that you’ve only wistfully thought about? Go ahead. I’ll wait right here.

Now that you have given some thought to what you might enter on this intentionally blank page, what quote (affirmation) would you give yourself to round out this story? To keep you motivated to follow through on what you have written?

Wait, wait, there’s more… the best part of this gift?…you can “find” a page intentionally left blank, whenever you choose. After all, you’re the author of this book!

Your Call to Action

Now actually take a blank piece of paper, your page, and literally write your story going forward from today. What would you change? Keep? Eliminate? Add in? Now imagine that you are 80 years old, looking back at this now-filled-in-page in your book. What makes you grin from ear to ear?
