The 4th of July is all about fireworks and celebration, showing gratitude for those who have served our country and marking our country’s independence from tyrannical rule. While I was enjoying the parade and festivities yesterday, I got to thinking about how these same concepts also can apply to our lives.
Have you had any fireworks in your life lately? And, I’m not talking about sparks flying, tempers flaring, and anger. I mean, have you had joyful bursts of energy, lighting up your sky, adding sparkle and oohs and ahhhs to your life? What has caused you to stop and experience uncensored wonder?
“Listen to the voice of nature for it holds treasures for you.”
Native American Proverb
You know, there are so many opportunities to experience these feelings, every day. Look around you. Notice the bird’s nest just outside your window. How does that momma robin know just when to get her fledglings to fly out on their own? When was the last time you stopped what you were doing and marveled at the glorious sunset? Or watched small children reveling in just being alive? Or laid in the grass and created creatures out of cloud formations?
As for celebration: when did you last celebrate YOU? I mean intentionally, consciously celebrate YOU? What might you do to honor your own uniqueness? How about a toast, naming your gifts to the world? Or reflecting on and honoring how far you have come over the past 15 years? Perhaps finding a “theme song” that captures your essence? Or just dancing with abandon?
“We’re fools whether we dance or not, so we might as well dance.”
Far too often we are caught up in the busyness of our days, tending to others, always focusing outward.
In the next week, vow to create your own personal holiday, even if it lasts for only 10 minutes. Find a way to shine the light on yourself and celebrate your essence, consciously notice the wonders all around you, be grateful for the gift of life, and let your heart light up the sky!
